**YEP Toronto is currently inactive, but those interested in getting involved with YEP should contact other YEP chapters in Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.**
Our Background
Young Environmental Professionals (YEP) is volunteer organization dedicated to promoting opportunities for young and emerging environmental and sustainability professionals.
YEP was founded in November 1997 in Toronto and has grown to include chapters in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and the National Capital Region. Leadership for YEP is provided by the National Steering Committee of chapter leaders, which includes young professionals from Suncor Energy, Environment Canada, The Privy Council Office, The Sheltair Group, The City of Toronto, and the Cardinal Group.
YEP believes that there are three key principles necessary to build capacity amongst its members.
The first principle for capacity building is education. YEP contributes to the education of its members by providing informal learning opportunities such as the YEP web site, and YEP workshops and speaker sessions.
YEP's second founding principle is engagement, which is provided through mentoring and support at YEP monthly meetings, and by facilitating member participation in community activities and projects.
YEP's third principle is employment, which is supported through distribution of job postings and by bringing potential employers and employees together at monthly meetings.
With these principles in mind, YEP has established a strong foundation that is based on:
- Eight years of community-based experience
- Growing community of members
- Five active chapters (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and the National Capital Region)
- History of successful monthly member meetings
- Americana 2003 Youth Host Initiative with Industry Canada
- Partnership with TD Canada Trust's Friends of the Environment Foundation (National Capital Region chapter)
- Established brand
- Relationships with stakeholders and local governments
- HTML web site
- National Steering Committee with representatives from private, public and voluntary sectors
