Events - YEP Calgary

Join us every second Wednesday of the month for our speaker series and networking events! These are a great opportunity to learn about what people and organizations are doing on the environmental front, as well as a chance to share a beer and good conversation with other YEP members.

Monthly Meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month after work from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and are hosted at Deville's in Arts Central (SE corner of second level - 100 7th Ave SW) unless otherwise posted.

Most speaker events are free for members and $5 for non-members. All welcome!

Approaching Major Projects in the Wake of Oil Spills with Dennis McConaghy


There is high risk and large upfront investment required for large infrastructure projects. Given the recent BP and Enbridge oil spills and impacts of actions from government agencies, ENGO, etc – what are the expected outcomes for the industry? Dennis McConaghy of TransCanada talks about increasing regulation, corporate responsibility and the impacts of current events on projects like McKenzie and Gateway.

As Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development Dennis McConaghy leads thedevelopment of major new infrastructure initiatives across TransCanada’s businesses. Mr. McConaghy has more than 25 years’ experience in oil and gas, beginning his career as a Research Associate with the Alberta Research Council. He has also worked for the Alberta Gas Trunkline and the Alberta Gas Ethylene Company. Mr. McConaghy graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1973 and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1975.The first YEP speaker event of the season will address the highly publicized spills that have shaken the foundations of the energy industry and its methods.  This talk will look at the effects these disasters will have on the policy that governs the industry and the standards that companies will be held to in the future.

Sept 9th - Ganesh Doluweera, PhD Candidate in Electrical Engineering and Energy and Environmental Systems at the University of Calgary, speaks about carbon offsets in the oilsands industry with a focus on cogeneration.

Jan 13 - Peter Tertzakian, Chief Energy Economist of ARC Financial Corporation and author of "A thousand barrels a second," examines the future of oil and offers insights into what it will take to rebalance our energy needs.

June 13 - Brade Clute from Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC) spoke about sustainability in retail and supply chain management.

May 14 - Wind Power in Alberta with Jason Edworthy from TransAlta Wind and Theresa Howland from Bullfrog Power.
